Lamborghini's CEO Didn't See Its New Supercar Until It Was Finished

stephan winkelman with lamborghini veneno at geneva motor show

Of all the hypercars on display at this week's Geneva Motor Show, the Lamborghini Veneno may go down in history as the least rational and most astonishing.

With only four copies total to be made, the 220-mph, $4.6 million carbon-fiber is a lawn dart aimed right at the heads of the competing McLaren P1 and LaFerrari, launched almost simultaneously on Tuesday.

The Veneno might also be the only car in recent memory to go from sketch pad to show floor without a final glance of approval by the company's CEO. In the rush to get it ready for the annual auto show, the only complete Veneno in the world went right to Geneva's Palexpo center before Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann could see it complete for the first time.

While it launches concept cars in other venues like Paris or even Pebble Beach, Lamborghini says only the Geneva Motor Show would do as the venue for the debut of the Veneno, a tribute to Lamborghini's 50th anniversary, says Maurizio Reggiani, director of research and development.

"Geneva is the most important venue in the world," says Reggiani, "Every supersport brand tries to have something to say: 'This is my vision of the future.'"

Geneva, he adds, is where the company puts out its most important news, and models, like the Aventador and Gallardo, reserving concepts like the Urus and Estoque for auto shows like Paris, Shanghai, even The Quail, to gauge public opinion, "to attack the market and to see the reaction, to allow us to take a decision" on whether to proceed to production or not.

lamborghini venenoA most extreme statement

This year, the statement from Lamborghini is arguably its most extreme yet.

"We want to say, this is our DNA. Nothing is forbidden to Lamborghini. We can be extreme in design, in technicality, in use of different materials, in different technology.

The mission handed to Reggiani and his engineers was to also make a car that could be fully homologated, and sellable.

The result is the Veneno, a name like every other Lamborghini, coined from a fighting bull, but also derived from the Spanish word for venom. Its Le Mans-ready look aside, the Veneno has 740 horsepower courtesy a 6.5-liter V-12 engine, a 0-60 mph time estimated at 2.8 seconds, and a top speed figured at 220.5 mph.

The engine is naturally aspirated, and Reggiani says for now, at least, that's a Lamborghini hallmark--in marked contrast to the hybrid packs added to the McLaren and Ferrari hypercars also on the Geneva show floor.

"At the moment, from an engineering point of view, we want to be top, but to also guarantee the DNA of Lamborghini," Reggiani says. "If the rule of the game will change, we will see what is the best choice on maintaining the DNA of Lamborghini."

He acknowledges that those other hypercars are changing the equation--but still insists there's no need yet to alter Lamborghini's reliance on conventional powertrains.

"We see the road, we see the landscape of what is happening in the future. For us [it] is, what is the best in terms of sportiness to maintain our DNA? Until it is not a must, naturally aspirated is perfectly fitted in our DNA."

The car is developed to a top speed that's not coincidentally higher than the figures quoted for both the LaFerrari and McLaren P1, but far off the benchmark set by another VW Group hypercar, the Bugatti Veyron. Reggiani insists the Veneno's development wasn't held back by anything, and confirms it's been tested in prototype form to its top speed at Italy's Nardo test track.

"We decided in the end, 355 kph [220.5 mph] is a good number," he says, "something we can achieve without trouble. You are really at the limits of the car. I think about the customer and I say, this is enough."

lamborghini venenoAeroforce

More than being outrageous and timely, the Veneno's aim is to deliver race-ready aerodynamics, not an ultimately low coefficient of drag. The balance, "moment by moment," between aerodynamicists and designers, Reggiani says, was the biggest challenge in getting the Veneno's carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic skin molded into the right shape for strong downforce and high-speed grip.

Wrapping the monocoque in reshaped carbon fiber--the bottom half is based on the Aventador, while the top half is new--lets the front end act as an aero wing, channeling and shaping the airflow through the hood and even through the wheels to create better stability at the Veneno's highest reaches.

It's also effective in cutting weight by about 275 pounds, and in creating better air management under the car, where the Veneno adopts smoother underbody and an air diffuser and air splitter at the tail.

It's another step down the road to using carbon fiber as the lingua franca for all Lamborghinis, but while carbon fiber "is the material of the future," it's not the only one. More important, Reggiani points out, is the marriage of many different technologies, balancing performance and weight and strength against cost.

"What is important is to define the right technology, and to be able to combine in a hybrid way," he explains, citing the BMW i8 and other concept-to-production vehicles as the harbinger of a new era of mixed-material cars.

"More and more, everybody recognizes the potential of the carbon fiber--not the material, but that you can create only what is necessary, and where you do not [need it], nothing."

lamborghini venenoWow, and things better left unsaid

With the covers off the McLaren P1 last year in Paris, and hints dropped about LaFerrari for weeks, the debut of the Veneno came as more of a surprise, which pleased Reggiani.

"We were able to shock the audience this year," he says, with "a completely new interpretation of the message of Lamborghini, when we talk about the supersport of the brand."

Of the hypercars on display, it's also the one that's closest to production, with the display car a development prelude to three more cars to be built this year. It's limited production to the extreme--and the customers are extreme in their own way, each having bought their Veneno sight unseen.

"They didn't know what kind of car they'd buy," Reggiani says. "They only were told it is a trilogy, that it will be the most extreme Lamborghini ever built, a tribute to the 50 years of Lamborghini. Two of the customers came to the motorshow at 6:30 a.m. to see the car, because they never saw it before.

Each will get a distinctive car--the cars will have either a red, or white, or green stripe, a nod to the Italian flag. The order of choice? "This was based of the ranking when they book the car." Lamborghini's prototype will be the only car to bear the tricolore.

There's more personalization available to Lamborghini buyers, but Reggiani is firm in explaining that his company won't build one-off cars designed with client input.

"We are probably the first ones to push in the direction of the one-off as a way to celebrate our design, our innovation," he says. "But we are proud to decide what is Lamborghini, and not let the customer decide what is the Lamborghini of the future.

"Only because you have money, does not decide what is Lamborghini. In the end, we are proud to make Lamborghini the owner of the DNA.

That leaves responsibility squarely in the hands of Sant'Agata, and as Reggiani admits, that can be its own mixed blessing. You don't know if its a success or its a flop. Last year it was more emotional, easier to create a wow. This year, it's more of a car."

He knew it would be well-received when Jackie Stewart stopped by. Stewart's reaction: "Wow, wow wow!"

Of course, the most important to impress may have been the boss--president and CEO of Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann. The race to complete the Veneno meant that from sketch to show car, only five or six months elapsed.

"A classic job, like if you race," Reggiani says.

Which might explain why the Geneva Motor Show was where Winkelmann first saw the completed car.

"We decide and we go, no discussion," Reggiani smiles. "He see some sketch, but he look for the first time the car here. We receive a target and run full speed toward it. No time to see the car, at the end is like a puzzle, in the last minutes you assemble everything."

"For him it was a surprise."

What was his response?

"Wow."

That's it?

...

"Some word that is not possible to repeat," he grins.

The Lamborghini Murcielago is a beautiful car. Even, it turns out, when it's on fire.

According to Car News China, which posted the photos and shared them with us, the Lambo may have been involved in an illegal drag race in Shenzhen on Sunday when the fire began.

By the time the flames went out, all that was left of the lime green supercar was a blackened hull.

The Murcielago, produced between 2001 and 2010, goes from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds. It costs around $400,000.

A British Limo Service Wants To Make A Stretch Lamborghini Aventador

The stretch Hummer limousine has been around for a good while, and for party-goes who want a new ostentatious way to get around town, the next great ride may come from a British limousine company.

Cars For Starts created an online rendering of a stretch Lamborghini Aventador, and it looks like an awesome way to go to your senior prom.

Cars For Stars says it has no current plans to turn the digital concept into a reality, but that it is looking for a "willing and passionate sponsor" to make it happen:

Extremely rewarding benefits of sponsoring the Lambo include 12 months of free advertising, as well as the renaming of the car to incorporate the name of the company! With the backing of someone who wants to see this stunning vehicle taken off the drawing board and onto the road, we'll soon be able to see the stretch Lambo become a reality!

It's a long shot, but if it ever gets made, it would probably be quite popular — though unable to match the real Aventador's 0 to 60 mph time of 2.8 seconds.

Here's the disappointingly small interior:

There's A Lamborghini Cop Car On The Streets Of Dubai

Dubai is well known for being a wealthy city where residents love their supercars.

But it's not only the rich and famous who drive top-of-the-line vehicles: The city's police force has a Lamborghini.

Dubai's fleet of cop cars is getting a makeover, according to Vocative, and it's certainly a big step up for any police officers who need to chase down a criminal.

One question: In a two-seat car, where do you put someone you've arrested?

Here's one photo, from Twitter user @iCorazonMessi:

And another, from @sheikboflaseh:

This isn't the only fancy cop car we've seen in Asia: One police department in northeast China has its own Porsche Cayenne.

The Ridiculous Supercars Of The Dubai Police Force

Dubai's reputation for extravagance now applies to its police as well.

The force has been building up its vehicle fleet recently, and it's not worrying about cost, adding a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, and more — some of them worth more than a million dollars.

There's little practical use for a two-seat police car — where do you keep suspects under arrest? — but the force has said the outrageous vehicles serve to "enhance its patrolling abilities."

No, that doesn't mean they're for high-speed car chases. "We have never exceeded the speed limit on the highway," Lt. Mariam Al Kaabi told Abu Dhabi's The National.

Rather, Dubai's police chief reportedly said on Twitter, the ultra-expensive rides were selected for "acting classy with people."

One of the newest acquisitions is a Chevy Camaro SS. Its 6.2-liter V8 engine produces 426 horsepower, not enough to match most of the cars on this list.

This Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG runs for about $200,000, has room for two, and can go from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds.

Red leather makes for a nicer interior that what most cops get to enjoy.

Lamborghini Created A Completely Ridiculous Supercar For Its 50th Birthday

lamborghini egoista team

Over the weekend, the first photos and details for a brand new Lamborghini concept cropped up.

We now have all the official details for the concept, which goes by the name “Egoista” and was developed as a tribute to Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary by a team led by Volkswagen Group design boss Walter De Silva.

The concept’s name, which is Spanish for “selfish,” has been applied because of the single-seat design. But rather than signify a potential for single-seat racing, the design was picked to allow its driver the ability to express their individual personality to the maximum.

“This is a car made for one person only,” De Silva explained at the unveiling of the Egoista at Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary Grande Giro drive, which took place in Italy during the past week.

The Italian designer also used the words “hedonism,” “four-wheeled UFO” and even “Never Never Land” in describing the car.

While the Egoista is a pure design concept, Lamborghini has said in the past that it never builds a concept without the intention of production. But this one is a gift from Lamborghini to itself, so we doubt it will be sold to the highest bidder.

lamborghini egoistaIt does present some interesting technology we may see in the future, however. Namely, lightweight construction, new design language and a 592-horsepower version of the Gallardo’s 5.2-liter V-10 engine. Materials used in the construction include aluminum and carbon fiber.

The upper part of the vehicle also features active flaps integrated in the bodywork that move depending on the driving conditions, providing a balance between drag and downforce. Two rear flaps activate automatically at high speeds to increase stability, while a series of air intakes on the back of the engine hood provides the cooling air flow to the V-10 engine.

New features of the Gallardo successor perhaps?

Inspiration for the concept’s design came from an Apache helicopter, whose ejecting cockpit design was borrowed for the Egoista. The profile, meanwhile, is said to represent a charging bull with its head down and horns pointed forward.

“The cockpit represents a sort of survival cell, allowing the driver to isolate and protect themselves from external elements,” De Silva explained.“We kept an eye on the future when designing the Egoista, with the idea that its cockpit could have been taken from a jet aircraft and integrated into a road vehicle.”

Inside, there is a racing seat with a four-point seatbelt, airbags, and the bare minimum of instruments. The focal point of these is a head-up display, typical of jet fighters. To get out of the vehicle, the driver must remove the steering wheel and rest it on the dashboard, open the canopy, stand up and then sit down on a precise point of the bodywork, then swivel 180 degrees. At this point, he or she can finally set their feet down and stand up.

Hedonism, indeed.

Lamborghini Is Officially Making This Gorgeous SUV

Lamborghini Urus SUV

Whether you’re a fan or not, you had better get used to seeing a Lamborghini-badged SUV in your neck of the woods as a production version of 2012’s Urus SUV concept has been given the green light.

Lamborghini made the announcement at its 50th anniversary celebratory event in Italy last week.

The sharp-edged Urus was first shown at the Beijing Auto Show a year ago and within a month of its reveal there was talk of a production version. However, the ongoing economic crisis in Europe had Lamborghini’s bosses worried and a final decision put on hold.

It looks like circumstances have changed, as it was also revealed at last week’s 50th anniversary celebration that development of the new SUV remains on schedule.

The SUV is to share a platform with the next-generation Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. This same platform, a variation of the Volkswagen Group’s MLB, will also be used for Bentley’s planned SUV, though production of this model hasn’t been made official just yet.

To extract the performance one would expect of a Lamborghini from this SUV platform, engineers are expected to use lighter carbon fiber in place of some of the steel and aluminum sections. One of these sections is believed to be a T-shaped structure extending from the central tunnel to the rear suspension hinging points.

Peak output will also likely be higher in the Lambo than in the other VW Group SUVs, with most reports suggesting about 600 horsepower. The standard powertrain is expected to be a twin-turbocharged V-8 though a plug-in hybrid has also been touted.

Here's What We Think Lamborghini's New Gallardo Will Look Like

CarBuzz Gallardo

Lamborghini is expected to unveil the Gallardo’s replacement in Frankfurt this September.

These exclusive images depict the next Raging Bull.

It’s Lamborghini’s best-selling car of all time, but after being on the market for almost a decade the Gallardo’s replacement is imminent.

We know a naturally-aspirated V10 will be mated exclusively to a dual-clutch box and its lightweight body, built on a brand-new modular platform, will combine aluminum and carbon fiber.

While Lamborghini has kept the design of the new car a closely guarded secret, we’ve been informed the Gallardo’s replacement will adopt styling cues from the Aventador and Sesto Elemento, as well as the limited-edition Veneno and one-off Egoista.

So we put our rendering artist to work and created the new Lamborghini Cabrera.

Like "Gallardo," that name is one of five historic Spanish bull breeds the Miura line traces its roots to. Others include the Navarra, Veragua, and Vistahermosa-Parlade.

Discounting the latter for being too long we have three contenders for the Gallardo successor’s name.

Nothing is for certain, but these renderings penned by Carbon Designs give the best look yet of what Lamborghini’s new model will look like.

This New Lightweight Lamborghini Can Hit 199 MPH

lamborghini lp 570 4

It was only a few months ago that Lamborghini founded its Squadra Corse department to handle its motorsport activities, including its one-make series, theBlancpain Super Trofeo.

The Super Trofeo race series spawned its own special-edition racing Gallardo, and now the Squadra Corse department has given us another.

Also based on the Gallardo Super Trofeo, the Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse is a road-going car that leverages technology and weight savings from race car, including extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber, high-downforce aerodynamics, and quick-release engine cover.

The engine is the same V-10 used in the race car, accelerating the car to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds and to 124 mph in 10.4 seconds. Top speed is 199 mph. The quick acceleration isn't just about power, however, as Lamborghini has managed to cut the Squadra Corse's weight by about 150 pounds compared to the Gallardo LP 560-4.

Like the Super Trofeo race cars, the LP 570-4 Squadra Corse is all-wheel drive, and comes standard with the robotized e-gear six-speed transmission operated by steering wheel paddles.

The design of the car is intended to highlight the brand's Italian roots, with a decal strip along the flank of each car in the colors of the Italian flag: green, white, and red. Available exterior colors are yellow, white, grey, and red, with a matte black rear wing and high-gloss treatments for the hood, intakes, wheels, and rear diffuser.

Inside each Squadra Corse is a minimalist interior finished principally in carbon fiber and Alcantara.

The Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse will make its world debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September and is expected to be the last Gallardo variant before the car's successor arrives.

Lamborghini marked its 50th anniversary this year and as part of the celebrations rolled out the striking Veneno at March’s 2013 Geneva Motor Show, a bespoke supercar based on the Aventador platform and with styling one could best describe as polarizing.

Only four examples were promised, one to be retained by the factory and three to be delivered to Lamborghini’s most loyal customers.

Could one of those loyal customers already have lost interest in their Veneno and decided to sell? Probably not.

An exotic car dealership by the name of Refined Marques has posted a photo of the Veneno on its Facebook page, along with the message “For Sale.”

A quick search of Refined Marques’ website, however, shows a number of other exotics up for sale, including some as yet unreleased models like Ferrari’s LaFerrari and hardcore 458 Italia supercars. The dealership also boasts having a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento available for immediate delivery.

If you're keen to own a Veneno, you probably have a better chance of contacting Lamborghini and begging them to build you one rather than go to an imaginative dealership claiming to have cars that haven't even been announced.

Note, while none of the original Venenos may be up for sale, well-heeled Raging Bull fans may soon be able to put down a deposit on a Veneno Roadster. Reports out of the U.K. claim Lamborghini is considering building up to nine open-top Venenos and is currently in the process of asking its closest customers whether they’d be interested in such a car.

The world's largest car show is underway in Frankfurt, and automakers from around the world are taking the stage to reveal what they've been working on.

Lamborghini has come up with something special: The fastest Gallardo, ever.

The full royal name of this latest offering is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse.

It's derived from the Blancpain Super Trofeo race car, and little has been changed.

The new Gallardo and the Blancpain have the same 5.2-liter V10 engine, which generates an enormous 570 horsepower.

But the newcomer has one huge advantage over its father figure: It's street legal.

Lamborghini has announced a €191,100 ($253,303) plus tax price tag for the Squadra Corse, and a limited production run (no word on just how many models will be built).

And although you can take it for trips to the grocery store, please head to the track before putting the more than 500 horsepower to use.

It's derived from the Blancpain Super Trofeo race car.

The 'Squadra Corse' part of the name refers to Lamborghini's motorsports department. The place does good work.

The new Gallardo and the Blancpain Super Trofeo race car have the same 5.2-liter engine — no modifications. The V10 generates 570 horsepower, and is controlled by a 'robotized e-gear six-speed transmission.'

A Solid Gold Model Lamborghini Worth $7.5 Million Is Going Up For Auction

gold lambo

When you have, quite literally, everything--or at least the capacity to buy everything--what do you want? Solid gold models of $400,000 cars, apparently.

That's our take-away from this $7.5 million solid gold Lamborghini Aventador model, anyway.

Carved from an 1,100-pound block of solid gold, the model will weigh 55 pounds. In solid gold.

Fortunately for the automotive world's collective soul, the model is being put up for auction, with $650,000 intended for charity. Fortunately for the security of the showroom in Dubai, the model currently on display is a prototype, made of less valuable materials, reports CNBC.

This isn't the first time we've caught wind of this model by Robert Gülpen. Back in 2011, the model was announced with the intent of becoming the most expensive model car in the world.gold lamboThe model still hasn't been built, but Gülpen clearly has the intent to do so, and he's garnered support for the project directly from Lamborghini. Gülpen will use computer models of the actual Aventador and a five-axis milling machine to form an aluminum mold, which can then be used to make a carbon fiber mock-up of the model.

Solid gold isn't the only possible material for the car. In addition to details like wheels, glass, and interior made from gemstones and other precious metals, Gülpen says on his website that he'll build the car out of whatever the buyer wants--as long as they have the money.

Along the way, Gülpen hopes to create three new Guinness Book of Records entries for himself and the buyer: the most expensive model, the most secure container and show case, and the most expensive Lamborghini logo.

Someone in China took a Hyundai, made it roughly resemble a Lamborghini Aventador, then tried to sell it for just over $16,000.

According to Reuters, the car had an ad under the windshield reading, "This refitted Lamborghini car on sale, starting price 98,000 yuan." The car was illegally parked on a pedestrian street in Chongqing. Police towed it after they could not contact the owner.

Here's what it looks like:

The headlamps are roughly the right shape, as is the hood. Not much else is right. And Lamborghinis don't have sunroofs. They do have Lamborghini hood ornaments. Here's a real Aventador:
