Lamborghini Is Recalling 1,500 Gallardos Over A Potential Fire Hazard

Lamborghini Gallardo

DETROIT (AP) — Italian sports car maker Lamborghini is recalling some Gallardo models because power steering fluid can leak and catch fire.

The recall affects about 1,500 Gallardo Coupe and Spyder autos, from model years 2004 to 2006. The cars start at about $200,000.

Lamborghini says in documents sent to U.S. safety regulators that pipes can corrode near the power steering pump. In rare cases, fluid can leak onto the hot engine and cause a fire.

The company says it discovered the problem in product monitoring and testing. No fires or injuries have been reported.

The cars were built from May of 2003 through April of 2008.

Owners will be notified this month. Dealers will update the power steering system free of charge.

Lamborghini's New 'Aventador' Packs Huge Power, But Doesn't Eat Up Gas

$

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4

Very rarely does a super sports car think about saving fuel.

It is all about packing as much power as possible to get the maximum output, which results in massive fuel consumptions.

But with the world's leading companies looking at the green side, Lamborghini couldn’t be left far behind. The brand new 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 gives out a better fuel efficiency with a cylinder deactivation and innovative start/stop system.

It might sound fancy and technical but what these supercaps basically do is bring the car to full V12 power in a very fast 180 milliseconds, one of the world’s fastest systems.

Also keeping in mind Lamborghinis lightweight objective, this unit reduces the over all weight by 3 KGs as it supplies power to the electronic systems of the car. Guess what the best part about this system is? It lasts virtually the entire vehicle life.

The Cylinder Deactivation System is another feature on this new LP 700-4 and this comes in handy when the car goes below a speed of 135 km/hr. The CDS acts up in conditions less than 135 km/hr and turns of one cylinder bank effectively making the car run as an inline 6. The smallest of acceleration and the V12 kicks right back in taking the car’s power to full capacity.

These new systems have brought out the best in Aventador’s fuel efficiency and bring consumption down to 16 liters/ 100 KM and reduced CO2 emissions from 398 g/km to 370 g/km.

lamborghini paris motor show

The outlook of the auto industry in Europe may be ghastly (with no recovery in sight), but that has not stopped the world's automakers from putting on a brave face and trotting out their best hopes at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

Alongside the practical vehicles that are meant to boost sales figures, radical concepts presage the future of the troubled industry, and supercars tempt millionaires with a taste for luxury and power.

Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ferrari and others are all out in force, adding life and beauty to an auto show that desperately needs it.

Hitting the market in June, Mercedes-Benz's SLS AMG Electric Drive gets 750 hp and a top speed of 155 mph.

The Fisker Karma has had its problems, but still qualifies as one of the coolest cars in Paris.

The new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 is 7 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor.

Reader Michael K. spotted this amazing Lamborghini outside the restaurant Revel in New York's Meatpacking District a few weeks ago.

After some research, it turns out that this is likely the Aventador driven across the country in the Gumball 3000 by New York couple Bryan and Concubine Salamone, aka Team Salamone.

It's always possible that someone else bought an orange Aventador and added the chrome panels to create the same effect, especially since this photo does not reveal if this car has the "WINNING" license plate that marks the Salamone's car. But chances are, this is the same ride.

A California driver was badly injured Saturday night after crashing his Lamborghini into a median on Interstate 15 near San Diego.

The 35-year-old man hit speeds above 100 mph, and the car split in half and caught on fire after the collision, the AP reported. He was airlifted to UCSD hospital with major injuries and burns.

Officials said they suspect the man was driving under the influence, and that alcohol may have been a factor in the fiery crash, according to NBC San Diego.

classic car club manhattan membership drive

There are few pleasures in life equal to driving a really great car, especially if it was built in the 1960s and can still turn heads on the street.

That is why more than 300 drivers have joined the Classic Car Club, the private, luxury club that offers the chance to drive an amazing stable of more than 40 classic cruisers and modern supercars. Its motto: "Join the Club. Drive the Cars."

At the invitation of Director Michael Prichinello, I spent a few days as a member, joining the ranks of Robert Downey, Jr., Jay-Z (who apparently never used his membership), Tumblr CEO David Karp, and more, with full access to an amazing fleet of classic and current Lamborghinis, Porsches, Ferraris, and more.

Deciding what to drive was not an easy task, but it was certainly a fun one.

After less than a week, I came to the conclusion: There's no better way to get your driving fix than becoming a member if you can afford it.

The sign on the front door lays out what the club is all about.

The club has 40 to 45 cars at any given point. They regularly buy and sell vehicles to keep the selection fresh.

When a member comes to pick up a car, it's lined up at the entrance by a staff member.

Darren Clarke: I've Had 15 Ferraris, Three Lamborghinis, And Lived The Dream

$

darren clarke

There are plenty of popular misconceptions about me and many revolve around drink. To listen to some you’d think I crawled home every night, but while I admit to a liking for the black stuff and fine red wine, I rarely imbibe more than I can handle, and it never interferes with my professional life.

On the road, I can go for weeks without touching a drop and if I do go on a serious bender it is always well away from a tournament. People who think I’m a party guy who plays golf and then goes straight to the pub do not know the true Darren Christopher Clarke.

So what is the real me?

One of my biggest pluses is also one of my biggest negatives, in that my desire and determination, admirable qualities for the most part, sometimes get in the way of what I am trying to achieve. I want things so badly that although my attitude has driven me to the highest of highs, it has also taken me to the lowest of lows. And I find it very difficult to deal with the lows.

I have let my attitude get the better of me on many occasions. I know I shouldn’t have done, but I have. I get very angry with myself, and in those circumstances I am not a particularly nice person to be around. I rarely fall out with anybody other than myself, however. In all my years on the Tour, I haven’t really had a big bust-up with many people, although I once threatened to thump a major champion who had hit a ball way too close to my head.

I’ve always struggled to deal with failure and you have to deal with an awful lot of it. A golfer is only as good as his last result, unfortunately for me. I should be more relaxed. I should be happier and I’m not, because I crave success – not from a material point of view, not for recognition, but for myself. That hunger has been to the detriment of earlier relationships, including my relationship with Heather at times, because golf to me is all-consuming. It shouldn’t be, but it is.

I frequently ask myself, why am I doing this, why am I working away at this, why am I pushing myself to the limits, why am I doing it all over and over again? It’s driven me mad at times. There’s a saying that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Well, I’ve done all the right things – the practice, the gym, sports psychologists, coaches – over and over again, but the results rarely satisfy me.

And then there is the other Darren Christopher Clarke.

I’m a giver in a world of takers. I try to look after people who have helped me and I like to be very generous towards them. I never forget when people have been good to me and it’s fair to say I also never forget when anybody’s been bad. I’ve never actively sought a celebrity lifestyle. I’ve been materialistic because I’ve been in a position to afford the things I’ve dreamt of. I had pictures of Lamborghinis on my bedroom wall as I was growing up, and when I could afford one I bought one. I’ve been very good to myself, but I also take great pleasure in helping out my friends.

As Butch Harmon once said to me, ‘You don’t see any hearses pulling a safe’. Well, you’re definitely not going to see mine pulling one. Sometimes I’m generous to the point of stupidity, but I get great enjoyment from it. I’ve always done it and for nobody more than my family. I like to share a bit of happiness and that’s why I employ all my family.

My three main hobbies outside golf are cars, wine and fly fishing. I indulge in them way too much but I enjoy doing it. I work hard, so I play hard. What’s the point in working so hard if I can’t do that? Mind you, sometimes I’ve rewarded myself a little too much in comparison to what I’ve achieved and Chubby [Chandler] has had to rein me in. It was once said that I lived a major championship lifestyle without the major. To be honest, I probably got that from Chubby himself.

I’m not a celebrity golfer; it’s not me, just not my thing. It’s nice to get invited to one or two events now and again, and I do have some celebrity friends, but throughout my career I’ve tended to surround myself with what I would call regular, normal people.

I’ve done quite a few personality tests, including the Myers-Briggs, and those results indicate I’m an introvert, but people think I’m an extrovert. I am shy and will never go into a room first if there is an option. Yet that will never have come across, particularly in light of some of the outfits I’ve worn at tournaments.

One thing that has been a constant throughout my career and for most of my life is that when it comes to shopping and spending, I have few rivals. My excesses often have to be seen to be believed.

If I said I once bought 60 pairs of Calvin Klein underpants, would you believe me? Didn’t think so, but I did. Or 40 pairs of trousers on the same day from the same shop? Yes, I did. Or thirty belts? Yes, that’s me. I’ve had 15 Ferraris, three Lamborghinis and an assortment of Jags, Bentleys, Mercedes, BMWs and Porsches. The most cars I’ve ever had at once was seven and I’ll admit that was a little excessive. I’m more sensible now.

The lifestyle I’ve had, I dreamed about as a kid, even though there was nothing wrong with the modest lifestyle I had growing up. My dreams were big not small because I have always felt that if you don’t aim high enough, you will invariably come up short.

This may take some believing, but I’ve never known how much money I’ve had in the bank, although occasionally I’ve known how little there was when Chubby’s said, ‘For heaven’s sake, Darren, stop spending’.

My greatest extravagance was the private jet I owned with Lee [Westwood]. It cost us something like $12 million, with annual running costs of $2 million, and we had it for about 10 years. The running costs were ridiculous, but it was a great idea at the time. We were travelling a lot together because our itineraries were similar and it worked for us. But when Heather got sick, my schedule got out of sync with Lee’s, so when he used it, it cost him double and the same for me when I used it. We couldn’t split the bills any more and that’s when it stopped working, but there was always a nice buzz walking up the stairs to your own jet.

Looking back now, I know it was an extravagance, but that was when I was playing an awful lot of golf in Europe and America. Over the course of a year, it gave me an extra week with the kids and that was priceless.

Nowadays I’m just as happy going down to Belfast and getting on easyJet. I’m a lot more sensible than I used to be and some of that has been forced on me, because when Heather passed away I had to sit down and figure everything out. Thankfully, Alison has been wonderful for me in that respect. She’s a businesswoman who knows far more about the value of money than I do.

She’s helped me curb that foolish, excessive side. I did enjoy the high life for a while when I was in London, but circumstances changed and although London was the best place to be based for my golf, it wasn’t for my life. London and Portrush are chalk and cheese. London is a massive, wonderful city, full of the best things in life and all kinds of people and characters, whereas small-town Portrush has just a few of the nice things in life, but is full of all the best people.

Although I adore the house I have in the Bahamas, there is no place like home and that home is Portrush. When you come from Ulster, there’s always the question about whether you are British or Irish. I loved London and I’ve loved representing Ireland, but when people ask what I am, I’m just proud to say that I’m from Northern Ireland. It’s home.

Lamborghini Could Make A Hybrid Version Of Its Urus SUV

$

lamborghini urus suv

Lamborghini doesn’t get much coverage on this website, and with its lineup of supercars being some of the worst offenders when it comes to gas mileage that’s easy to see why.

However, Lamborghini is taking major steps to change its reputation, with some of its more recent actions previously being unheard of in the supercar segment.

We are, of course, talking about Lamborghini’s decision to add engine stop-start and cylinder deactivation to its range-topping Aventador LP 700-4, boosting its mileage by about 7 percent. While this may seem trivial on a car that the EPA rates at 11/17 mpg city/highway and 13 mpg combined, it shows that Lamborghini is conscious of the impact its cars have on the environment.

In fact, the automaker has set its own internal goal of reducing its average CO2 emissions 35 percent by 2015, compared with 2009 levels. This is something all Volkswagen Group brands are committed to, though Lamborghini is particularly focused in this area.

The automaker sees boosting its environmental credibility as a company-wide task and is working on improving the efficiency of its entire operations.

Another initiative was the installation of photovoltaic solar cells, which has already helped reduce the CO2 emissions of its factory by 30 percent.

Looking further forward, the question of a hybrid Lamborghini comes to mind. Close rivals Ferrari and Porsche plan to launch new hybrid supercars as early as next year, and we could be seeing a third in the form of the McLaren P1, but Lamborghini has a different view here.

Its CEO Stephan Winkelmann said at the recent 2012 Paris Auto Show that hybrid technology, in its current form, won’t be fitted to any Lamborghini supercars as the technology is simply too big and heavy. That doesn’t mean the automaker is completely ignoring hybrid technology, however.

Instead of offering it on its supercars, Lamborghini may offer it as an option on a production version of the 2012 Urus SUV concept. The new Lambo SUV is yet to be given the green light for production, though if it is approved we should expect to see it in showrooms no earlier than 2017.

Speaking with Motor Authority, a spokesman for Lamborghini said something like the Urus would be the right type of vehicle for a Lamborghini hybrid.

Furthermore, with Lamborghini’s parent company Audi planning to launch a new range of plug-in hybrids in 2014, it’s clear the technology is already available to the Italian firm. Now it just needs the right platform to install it in.

There's A $195,000 Sports Car Parked Outside Zynga And No One Knows How It Got There (ZNGA)

Zynga's seen better days. It's shedding unwanted assets and tightening its belt.

It has company!

A passerby recently spotted a Lamborghini Gallardo parked outside Zynga headquarters, with a sheet of paper advertising it for sale for $194,900. The car lists for more than $200,000.

"HAVE YOU SEEN $ZNGA LATELY?!" wrote Andrew Vilcsak, a mobile engineering lead at Airbnb, whose headquarters are near Zynga's, when he posted the photo on Instagram.

We asked Vilcsak for more details. He told us he noted the words "Lamborghini San Francisco" on the sheet of paper, suggesting it might actually be a dealer's car.

We called British Motor Car Distributors, the local Lamborghini dealer. The general manager there declined to comment, but did add, "Good luck with the article."

We'd add: Good luck selling a Lamborghini to Zynga employees, who have seen their net worth crash along with their employer's stock price.

A Man Is Selling The Lamborghini He Built Because It Deserves A Better Owner

ken imhoff lamborghini countach

In 2008, Ken Imhoff of Wisconsin got a lot of attention when he revealed the Lamborghini Countach he had spent 17 years building in his basement.

But just a few years later, he is putting the homemade supercar up for sale on eBay, with a starting bid of $75,000.

Why is he giving up the ride he put so much effort into building? Because he loves it so much, he wants to see it happy.

Imhoff puts the mileage at 100 miles, proof that he has hardly driven the car. In a somewhat melancholy YouTube video he made for the occasion, he explains he wants the Countach to be in the hands of someone who will appreciate it more than he does:

I don't value its ownership as much as I did creating it...Life after its completion was not as well thought out as the build itself. And truth be known, it probably really belongs to someone who can appreciate it more than I do.

By that I mean, put it on display, drive it...The car deserves a lot more than I can give it.

In the eBay listing, Imhoff encourages bidders to ask questions and carefully consider what they might be buying: "There needs to be a lot of discussion between me and its next owner. It means a lot to me that it goes to the right home."

The car is a copy of the 1980 Countach, with real Lamborghini taillights, parking lights, windshield, and badges. Under the hood is a Ford V8 engine that produces 514 horsepower.

Here's the video he made, starting with his explanation for why he is selling it. To see the Countach in action, jump to the 4:10 mark. Things get really good around 6:30:

Lamborghini Took Over Miami's Airport To Show Off Its New Topless Supercar

lamborghini aventador lp 700-4 roadster

Lamborghini has finally debuted the roadster version of the LP 700-4 we first saw in photos in November, and it did not take the usual auto show route.

Instead of putting the topless supercar on stage, Lamborghini took over a runway at Miami International Airport yesterday, where it raced five of the new Aventadors at 210 mph.

That's 30 mph faster than the speed of a large passenger jet at takeoff.

The airport fun was followed by a 50-vehicle parade down Collins Avenue in South Beach.

The Italian automaker noted that the airport takeover was authorized by the FAA and that thanks to careful planning, no flights were affected.

The Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster, which comes with a $445,300 price tag, has 700 horsepower and goes from 0 to 60 mph in just under three seconds.

Lamborghini Unveils $3.9 Million Supercar To Celebrate Its 50th Birthday

stephan winkelman with lamborghini veneno at geneva motor show

The Geneva Motor Show is in full swing after opening to the press this morning, but things really kicked off last night when Lamborghini unveiled the highly anticipated supercar it created to mark its 50th birthday.

Named for a legendary fighting bull, the Veneno checks off all the supercar must-haves: Carbon fiber body construction, a striking body style made with aerodynamics in mind, and an eye-popping price tag.

At $3.9 million, the Veneno is the most expensive Lamborghini ever built and is among history's priciest production cars.

Its 6.5-liter, 12-cylinder engine will produce a whopping 750 horsepower, enough to send the car from from 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds, and up to a top speed of 220 mph.

The new Lambo is street legal, but only the luckiest of car lovers will ever have the chance to see one in the flesh: Only three will be produced. Not surprisingly, they have already been sold.

The car on display in Geneva is a prototype, and will not be sold, according to CNN Money.
