Lamborghini leaked photos of its next supercar

Screen Shot 2016 02 18 at 1.47.44 PM

It's no secret Lamborghini's bringing a special edition supercar to the 2016 Geneva Motor Show next month.

However, it may be the worst kept secret of all time.

The car is meant to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of company founder Ferrucio Lamborghini, and now we might know what it looks like.

AutoGuide found some patent drawings that were filed on October 16, 2015. While short on actual information, the images clearly depict an unreleased Lamborghini supercar.

One logically makes the conclusion that these images are of the upcoming celebratory supercar that has been dubbed the Centenario LP 770-4.

Facts are few but we've heard the car might be the most powerful Lamborghini ever launched thanks to a whopping 759 horsepower (770 metric hp). Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann already ruled out the possibility that the car will be based on the Huracan, meaning it will likely be a re-skinned Aventador with a V-12 and all-wheel drive.

Insiders have said the car will sport a unique body, one that is beautiful and not as extreme as other hardcore, wedge-shaped Lamborghinis. Word has it that a run of only 20 Centenario LP 770-4s are planned, all coupes.

Road & Track is reporting 20 convertibles as well, but these images seem to indicate only a coupe body style. Given Lamborghini's history with special edition supercars, all will have a big price tag and are likely spoken for already.

Lamborghini Huracan Spyder Stephan Winkelmann

Lamborghini has replaced its CEO with a former head of Ferrari's Formula 1 program, AutoBlog is reporting.

Stephan Winkelmann will be moved to Lamborghini parent-company Audi's vaunted Quattro performance division.

He will have his work cut out for him: Audi recently announced it would be revamping its Quattro all-wheel drive system, which has been an essential component of the brand since 1980.

Assuring implementation goes smoothly will likely be a big administrative task.

Winkelmann, who had been with Lamborghini since 2005, oversaw the release of two highly-successful new models: the V12 Aventador in 2011 and the V10 Huracán in 2014.

Last year alone the Italian manufacturer of automotive dreams sold a record-setting 3,245 vehicles. Business Insider spoke to Winkelmann last year about his role running one of the world's most famous exotic car brands.

The man who will replace him, Stefano Domenicali, took the reigns of Ferrari's Formula 1 team in 2008, having previously worked his way up through the ranks for 15 years.

Domenicali resigned from the position in 2014 after a dismal season for the team and was quickly scooped up by Audi.

Huge news everyone: You can still buy President-elect Donald Trump's old Lamborghini on eBay.

The car went on sale before Election Day and is still up for the taking, according to the sellers who said they are waiting for a buyer now that the results of the election are out.

Lamborghini's flagship Aventador supercar just got an extra dose of old-school insanity

Lamborghini Aventador S

On Monday, Lamborghini unveiled the latest version of its flagship supercar, the Aventador S.

"This is the next generation Aventador as well as the expression of new technological and performance milestones in super sports car development," Automobili Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.

"The Aventador S is visionary design, cutting-edge technology and driving dynamics in pure harmony, and elevates the concept of super sports cars to a new level."

The most notable upgrades from the current LP 700-4 Aventador — which has been around since 2012 — occur on the aerodynamic front. The S receives a more aggressive nose featuring a pronounced front splitter and larger air-intake ducts designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency and engine cooling.

Out back, the Aventador S gets a three-position active rear-spoiler along with a large diffuser.

Lamborghini Aventador SAccording to Lamborghini, the new aero package improves front-end downforce by 130% over the existing model — while overall aerodynamic efficiency has increased, in some cases, by as much as 400%.

In an era dominated by down-sized turbocharged engines and hybrid-electric drive systems, Lamborghini's flagship Aventador achieves heart-stopping performance in a decidedly old-school manner —  the brutal power of a hulking 6.5-liter, naturally aspirated V12 engine. With the Aventador S, there's now more of that throwback horsepower.

The upgraded V12 in the S produces 730 horsepower (740CV) — up 40 from the LP 700-4.

As a result, Lambo claims that the Aventador S can make the sprint to 0-60 mph from a standstill in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph.

Lamborghini Aventador SThe big V12 puts its power to the pavement through a 7-speed gearbox and a Haldex all-wheel-drive system.

Inside, the Aventador S gets a digital TFT instrument display along with Apple CarPlay compatibility, a drive-mode selector, and a telemetry tracking system.

The new Lamborghini Aventador S is expected to arrive in the spring of 2017 with a price tag of $421,350.

This stunning SUV will be Lamborghini's first electric hybrid

Lamborghini Urus

The new Lamborghini Urus will be a different type of Lamborghini.

Although it won't be the first SUV to emerge from Sant'Agata, it will be the brand's first hybrid when it arrives sometime in 2018.

In an interview with Autocar, Lamborghini R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani confirmed that the upcoming Urus will be offered with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

According to Reggiani, Lamborghini purists need not fear, for hybridization will not spread beyond the Urus SUV.

Rumors of a production Lamborghini hybrid have been floating around the industry from some time.

At the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the Italian supercar maker teased the public with the hybrid Asterion concept.

In a 2015 interview with Business Insider, then-Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann ruled out the hybridization of the brand's supercars, but hinted at the possibility of a hybrid Urus.

Lamborghini URUSIn the interview, Winkelmann, who left Lambo to become the new boss at Audi Sport earlier this year, called the Urus the "supercar of SUVs" that is designed with passenger comfort and usability in mind.

The idea of a hybrid Lamborghini isn't as far fetched as one might think. The Urus will be built on VW Group's MLB-evo platform. The award-winning modular platform also underpins, among others, the Audi Q7 SUV which is already available in plug-in hybrid guise.

In addition to the hybrid, the Urus will also offered with a 4.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V8 sourced from parent company Audi.

The production variant is not expected to stray very far from the Urus Concept that made its world debut at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show.

Upon its arrival, the Urus will become the latest entrant into the new ultra-luxury SUV segment. Others in the segment include the Bentley Bentayga — a fellow MLB-evo platform vehicle— and Rolls-Royce's upcoming Project Cullinan.

Lamborghini’s Urus SUV will be a game-changer for the company — here’s why

$

Lamborghini urus

The COO of Lamborghini makes no bones about what an SUV will mean for the exotic Italian automaker.

"It's going to change the landscape of the company," Alessandro Farmeschi told Business Insider when we sat down at the Detroit auto show last month.

When the Lamborghini Urus goes on sale later this year, it will enable Lambo to join the high-performance luxury SUV party — a party that kicked off way back in 2002, when Porsche debuted the Cayenne SUV. In the last year, the festivities have decidedly heated up, as Jaguar, Maserati, and Bentley have all jumped in (even Rolls-Royce is preparing to launch an SUV).

The motivation is obvious. In the US especially, SUV sales have been booming. Anyone selling a luxury version has been raking in the cash. Cadillac brought its XT5 crossover to market last June and within a short period of time was moving 5,000 units a month. Demand is indisputable.

With sports-car sales fading, Lamborghini and teenage-bedroom-poster rival Ferrari have been the main SUV holdouts. But Ferrari continues to steadfastly deny any plants to create an SUV, referring customers instead to its GT4C Lusso two-door all-wheel-driver, or to former stablemate Maserati's Levante.

Lambo is a different story. The forthcoming Urus will join the Huracán supercar and the Aventador hypercar as the more practical choice in the Lambo lineup.

Lamborghini Urus

Expectations are high. Farmeschi called it a "game changer," adding that it will "double the size of the company" and "enlarge the customer base."

And by double, he means literally double: Lamborghini's factory in Italy will expand from 800,000 square feet to 1.5 million to handle Urus production.

Like the Cayenne 15 years ago, the Urus has an obvious challenge: It has to be an SUV that will satisfy Lamborghini enthusiasts. Porsche fans were skeptical of the German carmaker's SUV aspirations (Porsche and Lamborghini are both members of the Volkswagen Group, by the way), but the Cayenne has been wildly successful for a company once known mainly for its 911 sports car.

Lamborghini LM002

Lambo briefly flirted with an SUV in the late 1980s and 1990s, the offbeat LM002, which was more of a Hummer-clone than a proper Lamborghini. The Urus is a different beast. It's a sleek, aggressive super-SUV that Farmeschi said must maintain the DNA of Lamborghini while serving as a daily driver.

"Lamborghini" and "daily driver" aren't typically encountered in the same sentence, so you can see what Farmeschi and his company are up against.

That said, the COO envisions a "two-Lamborghini driveway" in the future, with performance and utility parked side by side — and in the case of the Urus, captured in the same vehicle. The Lambo SUV might not be able to outperform an Aventador, but it isn't going to be Lamborghini's version of a Jeep Cherokee.

"I'm quite positive it will be a successful car," Farmeschi said.

The Huracán Performante is the ultimate Lamborghini

Lamborghini Huracan Performante

On Tuesday, Lamborghini unveiled its much anticipated Huracán Performante supercar at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Even though Lamborghini has always been recognized for its striking design and on-road performance, the Huracán Performante is designed to remind the motoring public that the raging bull can do damage on the track as well.

"This new car represents the powerhouse of Lamborghini DNA and innovation, and a 360-degree approach to creating class-leading super sports cars," Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and CEO, Stefano Domenicali, said in a statement.

"It illustrates the pinnacle of Lamborghini V10 production car performance to date, on both track and road, and is perfectly exemplified by its name: Lamborghini Huracán Performante."

In fact, the Huracán Performante made news recently by blitzing Germany's notorious Nürburgring Nordschleife race track in just 6 minutes and 52.01 seconds — a new production car record that bests Porsche's mighty 918 Spyder hypercar by five seconds. In fact, the Performante's lap times makes it roughly half a minute faster around the infamous 14-mile-long track than its rival Ferrari 488 GTB.

Lamborghini Huracan PerformanteAt the heart of the Performante's magic is a naturally aspirated 5.2 liter, V10 engine sourced from parent company Audi. Here, it produces a prodigious 640 horsepower going to all wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and a fifth generation Haldex four-wheel-drive system.

In addition, the Performante is built on a hybrid aluminum and carbon fiber frame with major structural components made from Forged Composite materials. All of which contributes to roughly 90 lbs of weight savings over the standard Huracán.

Lamborghini Huracan PerformanteThe upgraded Huracán is also equipped with an active aerodynamic system that uses a series computer controlled wings and flaps to modulate the grip levels based on driving conditions.

All together, the Huracán Performante is capable of hitting 60 mph from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds and 124 mph in 8.9 seconds.

Those lucky enough to have the $274,390 needed to acquire the Lamborghini Huracán Performante will begin to take delivery this summer.

Lamborghini Aventador S Launch Pocono

When you think loud, flashy, V12 exotica, you think Lamborghini. End of story.

Over the past five decades, Lamborghini and its V12-engined supercars have become pop culture icons. Although the brand has actually released a wide variety of cars ranging from stylish GT cars to a 12-cylinder rival for the Hummer, only five models — the Miura, the Countach, the Diablo, the Murcielago, and the Aventador — have been deemed worthy of being one of Sant'Agata's flagship supercars.

Lamborghini's current flagship, the Aventador, has been on sale for more than half a decade.

For 2017, Lamborghini reworked the supercar to create the new Aventador S with revamped aerodynamics, upgraded suspension, new electronics, and a more powerful engine.

Recently, Lamborghini gave Business Insider the opportunity to experience the Aventador S on the infield road course at Pennsylvania's Pocono Raceway.

Transportation reporter Benjamin Zhang took a ride in a $3.5 million Bugatti Chiron.

As the successor to the game-changing Veyron, the Chiron has the unenviable task of following in the foot steps of an automotive icon.

Fortunately for Bugatti, the Veyron is about as competent of a start point as one can ask for. And Bugatti's director of design Achim Anscheidt is one of the best in the business.

Anscheidt, a veteran of VW Group and Porsche's design departments, joined Bugatti as its design boss in 2004 just as the Veyron was readied for production.

With the Chiron, Anscheidt got his shot at the momentous task of creating the first new Bugatti in a decade. During its development, Bugatti built more than 30 prototypes that completed more than 300,000 miles of testing and went through more than 200 sets of tires.

A stolen Lamborghini worth £250,000 was 'miraculously' found 600 miles from its home

lamborghini huracan spyder

A rented Lamborghini supercar which vanished without a trace after being driven from Switzerland to London has ‘miraculously’ been found.

The £250,000 car had disappeared from GPS tracking systems in an Ikea car park in north London after a woman rented it and drove it 600 miles from Zurich.

Managing director of Scheiwiller Automotive Luxury Car Rental in Zurich, Adriano Scheiwiller, has confirmed to the Standard that the black Lamborghini Huracan Spyder was found earlier this month by a private investigator.

He said it was about to be shipped from the UK to West Africa when it was discovered in a shipping container along with other luxury vehicles.

He told Swiss newspaper Blick: "It's a miracle that the investigator found my Lambo. If a bit more time had passed, it would have been gone."

The investigator had reportedly been hired by someone else to find a stolen Audi.

Mr Scheiwiller added: "My Lambo was in the same container as the Audi. He knew my car from the media. It was an absolute coincidence.”

lamborghini route map

He previously told the Standard that a smartly dressed woman with an Irish passport hired the Lamborghini on Friday, July 14.

He said she told him the car was needed to drive to a business meeting in Strasbourg and that she would return it a few days later.

However when she failed to return the car, the company traced it all the way to London using its in-built GPS.

The tracker later went dead while the car was in the car park of Ikea off Angel Edmonton Road in north London.

Mr Scheiwiller said he was “very disappointed and angry” that his vehicle had been stolen.

He said: “She drove to London with the car and stole my Lambo.

“She was between 45 and 50 years old as in the passport photo. And very well dressed and a good character apparently, so she could play Hollywood with us.”

He offered a reward to 10,000 Swiss francs (a little under £8,000) to anyone who was able to help him find the car.

Premium Italian brand Tonino Lamborghini — which is not Automobili Lamborghini, the carmaker — is launching a luxurious Android smartphone, as we first saw via The Verge.

The device, named "Alpha-One," will be made out of materials such as liquid metal and Italian handmade black leather, and come in a package that also includes a custom leather case.

As far as specs go, save for the old Snapdragon 820 processor, the Alpha-One is actually a pretty high-end handset.

It has a 5.5-inch, QuadHD (2560x1440) AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of memory (and up to 128GB of expandable storage), a big, 3250mAh battery, and two cameras with 20MP at the back and 8MP at the front.

There's also a fingerprint reader, a USB-C port, front-firing stereo speakers, optical image stabilisation for the rear camera, and even a headphone jack and a dedicated DAC for audio fans. The onboard version of Android is 7.0 Nougat, atop which sits a customised software.

Lamborghini Alpha one [3]

As you might expect, the phone will not come cheap: At $2,450 (£1,915), Lamborghini's existing customers will likely be among the few ones who actually get their hands on it.

Lamborghini Alpha one [4]

You can find the Alpha-One online, or in select retailers in the UK and UAE. London's Harrods will be the sole UK partner, while a number of shops, such as the Dubai Mall's Levant luxury boutique, will have it in store in the UAE.

Lamborghini has already built 9,000 Huracáns

car

When Lamborghini was cranking out the Gallardo, it had a major hit on its hands.

Over the course of ten years, the Italian supercar marque produced over 14,000 examples. That's 1,400 Gallardos churned out on average each year between 2003 and 2013.

Now with the Gallardo's successor, the Huracán, Lamborghini has switched production into hyperdrive. In just three years since the car's launch, Lamborghini has produced a total 9,000 Huracáns.

That's more than double the rate of production compared to the Gallardo, and it isn't just a step up for the snack-sized sibling on the Lambo line. In six years time, Lamborghini have built 7,000 Aventador examples. The bigger bull is clearly selling well and the Huracán is doing outstanding.

When Lamborghini eventually brings its Urus to market, the numbers will only continue to grow. Though it will slot into the lineup above the Huracán, there's a strong chance Lamborghini could move more of its SUV than its "entry-level" supercar. It won't be cheap, but it will be powerful with an expected 650 horsepower on tap.

The SUV will also be appealing to those with deep pockets and a desire for a higher-riding vehicle that allows room for family, friends, pets, and groceries. That's a weird sentence to type out when talking about a Lamborghini, but it's one that will come to be when the Urus arrives in December.

We drove a $314,000 Lamborghini Huracan Spyder — here's what impressed us most about the supercar

Lamborghini Huracan Spyder

  • The Lamborghini Huracan Spyder starts at around $262,000, but our option heavy test car cost nearly $314,000.
  • The Huracan Spyder is the drop-top variant of Lamborghini's hot-selling entry-level supercar.
  • Our Huracan test car delivered Lamborghini performance with an extra dose of sunshine.

Before it's all said and done, the Huracan will be the best selling Lamborghini supercar of all time.

In just three years, Lamborghini has sold more than 9,000 Huracans worldwide.  It took Lamborghini a decade to sell 14,000 Gallardos, the current record holder.

And it's not hard to see why it's so popular with the brand's customers.

The Huracan is fast and agile with smoldering good looks and an intoxicating exhaust note. In 2015, Lambo's entry-level offering was a runner-up for our Car of the Year Award that year.

But what happens when you chop the top off the Huracan? Did the lack soft-top muzzle the Huracan's sparkling personality or spoil its stylish silhouette?

To find out, we spent a week with a Balloon White Huracan Spyder.

The Facts

The Lamborghini Huracan Spyder is powered by 5.2-liter, naturally aspirated V10 producing 602 horsepower. The Lambo gets all that power to the road through a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox and an advanced all-wheel-drive system.

The Huracan is also available in rear-wheel-drive. However, that version gets a detuned 572 horsepower version of the same engine.

According to Lamborghini, the all-wheel-drive Huracan can hit 62 mph in a blistering 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 201 mph.

The Huracan Spyder starts at a shade over $262,000 with our option laden test car coming out to nearly $314,000.

Raising the roof

Like its corporate cousin, the Audi R8 Spyder, the Huracan gets a tough canvas roof instead of a folding metal affair popular among high-priced drop tops these days. The top is available in three colors; black, brown, and red. Our test car came with the red top.

The electro-hydraulic roof can be raised and lowered in just 17 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph.

As with any convertible, the minute the roof is lopped off, chassis rigidity is compromised. Even with heavy-duty chassis reinforcements to make up for the missing roof, performance is lacking when compared to the coupe counterpart. The question is whether or not Lamborghini has done enough to overcome that. Well, I can honestly say, yes.

The carbon fiber and aluminum-intensive chassis feels rock solid. Lamborghini claims the Huracan Spyder's chassis is 40% stiffer than its predecessor, the Gallardo Spyder. Scuttle shake was nowhere to be found. Even on New Jersey's notoriously pot hole heavy roads.

("Scuttle shake" is annoying vibrations commonly exhibited by cars with lower chassis rigidity that experience too much flex.)

The experience

On the road, the Huracan Spyder is superb. The heart of this beast is the naturally aspirated V10, shared with the Audi R8. As loud and enthusiastic as the motor is in the Audi, in the Lambo its dialed up to 11. There's an added level of raw power and emotion that simply doesn't exist in the Audi.

Best of all, there are no turbochargers around to disturb the velvety smooth power delivery of the V10 nor are they present to muffle the sweet music of the ten-cylinder symphony.

The twin-clutch gearbox pairs well with the broad powerband of the engine like the dry red and juicy steak.

Around the corners, the Huracan Spyder remains well behaved and composed even when pushed to its limits. The all-wheel-drive Lambo is so docile that my colleague Matt DeBord felt that this raging bull was simply not angry enough.

However, anyone looking to spend time sideways in a Lamborghini should take a look at the less powerful, but wilder rear-wheel-drive Huracan.

Retract the top and the Huracan Spyder takes it to a whole another level. With the air whizzing past you, the rumble of the V10 resonating behind your hear, and a kiss of sunshine on your forehead Lamborghini motoring en plein air is something to be experienced.

Lamborghini Urus

  • The Lamborghini Urus was unveiled on Monday.
  • The SUV is expected to double Lamborghini's annual sales.
  • It's powered by a 650 horsepower, 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged, V8 engine.
  • Lamborghini claims the Urus has a top speed of 190 mph.

Lamborghini unveiled the all-new Urus SUV on Monday in a presentation that could best be described as shambolic. A technical glitch forced Lamborghini to temporarily shut down the launch presentation and global webstream.

While the presentation may have been a bit of a mess, the Urus is anything but. The Lambo looks lean, mean, and ready to take on the world.

The striking off-roader is just the second SUV in company history and is expected to double the company's annual sales total to around 7,000 cars globally.

Lamborghini UrusPowered by a 650 horsepower, 4.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V8, Lambo claims the Urus can hit 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 mph, besting the Bentley Bentayga's 187 mph mark.

According to Lamborghini, this makes the Urus the fastest SUV in the world.

"The Lamborghini Urus is a visionary approach based on the infusion of Lamborghini DNA into the most versatile vehicle, the SUV," Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali said in a statement. "The Urus elevates the SUV to a level not previously possible, the Super SUV."

Lamborghini UrusWith a starting price of $200,000, the Urus is firmly entrenched in a new class of ultra-luxury, high-performance SUVs dominated by the Bentley Bentagya, Range Rover Autobiography, Porsche Cayenne, and the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is set to join that group in the near future.

In addition to the 650 horses under the hood, the Lambo is also equipped with an 8-speed automatic that sends power to an advanced four-wheel-drive system with active torque vectoring and four-wheel-steering.

Lamborghini UrusThe Urus is also available with carbon ceramic brakes, adaptive air suspension, and six different driving modes.

Inside, the SUV boasts room for four in a leather lined cockpit with a modern touchscreen infotainment system featuring full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Lamborghini expected to begin delivery of the Urus in the Spring of 2018.
